RCI Position in the World

Even as global tourism continues to grow, timeshare travel - as a relatively new travel product is experiencing an unprecedented boom as the fastest growing sector in global tourism. The global timeshare travel industry is worth US $6.9 billion, and 4.5 million families around the world have now embraced the idea of timeshare travel. As the fastest growing branch of the leisure industry, timeshare travel occupies a position in the global tourism trade that is not to be neglected. The 1993 UN-World Tourism Organisation Recommendations on Tourism Statistics pointed out that timeshare travel is a new and inseparable force of global tourism. In actual fact, timeshare travel is a new product that combines elements of the tourism and real estate industries. In the 1970s in the US, timeshare was able to effectively reduce the vacancy rates of condominiums and apartments. Today, many major hotel chains in the US have already accepted and seen timeshare travel as an inseparable part of their operations. The most influential hotel chains in the world, like Marriott, Hilton, Sheraton, Hyatt, Radisson and Westin have all either fully embraced timeshare travel or allocated part of their units to be sold through timeshare channels.
Resort Condominiums International (RCI) is the largest, most influential and most international company in the timeshare travel industry. Established in 1974 with its headquarters in New Jersey, RCI has over 3 million member families today. Its 3,800 affiliated resorts in over 100 countries make it the largest provider of timeshare travel-related products and services in the world today.RCI's 3 million member families are located in more than 200 countries around the world. In its 30 years of history, RCI has provided more than 54 million people with vacation exchange services. RCI is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cendant Corporation (NYSE: CD), which is a diversified global provider of business and consumer services, primarily within the real estate and travel sectors.

After purchasing the rights to timeshare travel units within the RCI network, consumers have access to RCI's vacation exchange services, and can exchange the timeshare travel units they possess with any of the several million other members within the RCI network. At the same time, RCI's professionally trained service staff are on hand to assist members in making use of RCI's services to the full and to fulfil their dreams of travelling around the world.RCI itself does not own any resorts and does not sell any timeshare travel products. As the world's largest vacation exchange network, every resort that wishes to join RCI's network goes through a very stringent audit. Members provide feedback on their experience at the resort and their evaluations are the basis for assessing the quality of each resort so as to protect the rights of all members.

Many resort developers use vacation exchange as a promotion tactic, but RCI does not interfere, control or participate in the sales process of any resort or sales agent. All resorts and their sales agents are fully responsible for marketing themselves. In the Asia-Pacific region, RCI has actively helped countries like Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand in drafting timeshare travel legislation. Joining hands with the governments and consumer rights associations in these various countries, RCI has provided many valuable suggestions on the framework of timeshare legislation and the establishment of timeshare travel associations.
RCI promises its support of the development of the timeshare travel and tourism industries in China. After several years of hard work, RCI has had remarkable successes in the Chinese market. Despite the many challenges, RCI has successfully displayed the vital role that timeshare travel can play in the travel industry and in the economy. In the meanwhile, it has also given the relevant authorities in China valuable ideas on how to beef up travel policy.Timeshare travel is of great significance to the Chinese travel industry and the growth of the Chinese economy. According to the report "Timeshare travel enters China" found in the 1 February 2001 edition of the Newspaper Reference, "Currently there are over 80 million square metres of vacant real estate in China with most concentrated around travel destinations. Statistics indicate that a vacation exchange network of over 1 million members can contribute RMB 50-70 billion to the Chinese economy, fill up 3 to 5 million square metres of empty real estate and create 20,000 jobs."
